On dealing with depression (for people related to a depressed person) Part 1

 The Fast-Paced Routine

One problem why society does not know how to go through the stages of depression is the fact that people who know someone who is depressed do not know or never fully understand how to deal with it. Books and online articles, as well as experts, may have a lot of advice laid down already for dealing with it but in reality, in the fast-paced system of the present, the interventions just do not fit in with the normal schedule, that is why if a person who is depressed is not apparently exhibiting any kind of physical weakness, people would assume that they are in a short phase and can go back to the normal routine soon. This is a sad truth and one has to go out of the normal life routine to be aware of this problem, and that in itself is already a very challenging decision to make for a person working in a routine and would even, unfortunately, go so far as to questioning if the depressed person is only justifying their feelings and actions by being sad.

How the Society Views Depression

Depression has a very blunt definition. It is a state of sadness. It may have a varying degree of sadness depending on a person's experience but the truth remains that a person needs to have a sad experience to be depressed, likewise, a person can also have a sad experience and not be in a depressed state. Now considering these, society has to have a standard on how it views sadness for it to understand how to deal with depression. Currently, sadness is viewed from a capitalist perspective with over-the-counter temporary reliefs available for suppressing the mood. It can either be a drug, food, a statement shirt, an album, or even an application. Like rubbing pain killer on a sore muscle, these temporary reliefs condition a person's mind to forget the feeling of pain but it actually only addresses the problem on the surface level. With these, the people are also conditioned to think that just like muscle pain or headache, sadness can go away if you take any of these reliefs, and because of that sadness-and eventually, depression would appear as if it is just seasonal flu: Contagious but short-lived.
